Kindergarten Facts

Communication:
  • Brown Envelopes will come home every Wednesday.  Return on Thursday. Replacement envelopes are $.25.
  • “Home and Back” folders will come home every day. Please send paperwork back to school in this folder, not in the Brown Envelope.
  • Classroom Newsletters will come home every Friday.
  • See “Contact Information” letter to know how to contact your child’s teacher.
  • PTO meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 6:30 in the EC Media Center.
Drop Off Rules:
  • The first bell rings at 8:40 for the AM class and 12:40 for the PM class.  Your child should be at school by this time.  Walker/Rider kindergarten students should NOT arrive at school any more than 10 minutes before the first bell.  There is no adult supervision until 12:40 for the afternoon class. Please wait with your child until the bell rings.
  • Parents parked at the curb must stay in their cars.  If you wish to exit your car and wait before or after school, you need to park in a parking space.
  • Students are not allowed to cross the parking lot alone.
  • PM class - Leave room for 2 buses at the front curb at 12:40.
Go Home Rules:
  • We MUST BE NOTIFIED BY PHONE OR IN WRITING if your child is not going home his/her regular way!  For example if Mom is going to pick him/her up instead of riding the bus, we need you to tell us.  For safety reasons, we will NEVER take your child’s word for it if they say something different should happen.
  • Older siblings that are picking up a kindergartner at the end of the day should meet him/her by the flag pole outside of the kindergarten door or on the bus.
Homework:
  • Math homework and First Start Reading homework will come home weekly in the Brown Envelope beginning in two weeks.  Complete and return within the week.
  • Lifetime Words (sight words) will come home every 3-4 weeks in the Brown Envelope.
  • Pre-decodable and decodable books will come home weekly in the Brown Envelope
Birthdays:
  • Your kindergartner may bring in a special treat for his/her birthday.  District policy and health regulations prohibit home baked treats.
  • Birthday treats should be finger food and easy to eat.  Please do not send in drinks.
  • Some good birthday treat choices would be cookies, small cupcakes, or donuts, etc.
  • Please do not send in birthday prize bags.
  • If your child has a summer birthday, consider celebrating his/her half birthday.  Contact the teacher to set up a specific day
Snacks:
  • Most kindergartners like to have a snack at school. If each child could bring a snack to share about every six weeks, we will have enough snacks for every day.  These snacks will be shared by all of the children. A typical snack would be 10 Teddy Grahams or 2-3 Vanilla Wafers.  Some other snack ideas include graham crackers, animal crackers, pretzels, Pringles, cheese crackers, or saltines. They do not have to be packaged in individual serving sizes. Send in a box or bag of snacks anytime to start filling our snack cupboards!  Thank you!
  • Please do not send any snack containing peanuts or peanut butter.
  • Please let the school nurse and me know if your child has any food allergies.
Schedules:
  • The school district operates on a 6 day cycle.  Your child will have Phy. Ed., Music Class, Library time, and Computer Lab time once during that 6 day cycle.  The classroom newsletter will keep you informed of our schedule each week.  Gym shoes are needed to participate in PE.
Miscellaneous:
  • Email and voice mail isn’t always checked during the school day by your child’s teacher.  Do not leave urgent messages during the school day.  Example: a change in going home procedure for your child.  Please allow 2-3 days for an email or voice mail response.
  • Book Orders will come home periodically throughout the year.
  • A note will be sent home reminding you of your child’s “All About Me” week.
  • Classroom Volunteers will start after fall conferences.
  • It is good if your child wears gym shoes every day.  In the fall and the spring, we occasionally go outside for 10-15 minute motor breaks.  A pair of gym shoes can be stored in the backpack if your child prefers to wear other kinds of shoes.
